“Verity” opened with $32.6 million this weekend to lead all movies in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The sexy thriller stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett and is based on a novel by Colleen Hoover, whose books “It Ends With Us,” “Regretting You” and “Reminders of Him” were also turned into movies.
“Resident Evil” took second place with $12.5 million Friday through Sunday in its third week in theaters, Rentrak reported.
“Heart of the Beast” was third with $11 million in its second weekend, followed by “Primetime,” which grossed a tad over $8 million in its second weekend.
Fifth place went to “Digger,” which opened with $8 million, a disappointing total for the political comedy starring Tom Cruise.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “Forgotten Island” ($7.2 million), a re-release of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” ($4.4 million), “Drishyam – The Conclusion” ($2.7 million), “Practical Magic 2” ($2.6 million) and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” ($2.4 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $98.9 million. The year-to-date total is $7.94 billion — up 19.5% from the figure at this time last year, according to Rentrak.
