Alcohol and drugs were the focus of an investigation Tuesday into the deaths of a man and a woman who were killed when their 2016 Kia careened off the Long Beach (710) Freeway and struck a tree in Lynwood, authorities said.
The coroner’s office identified them as Los Angeles residents Braller Nunez, 23, and Beatriz Ortiz, 21.
The crash was reported around before dawn Monday off the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway approaching the Imperial Highway interchange, said California Highway Patrol Officer Stephan Brandt.
For an unknown reason, the driver, Ortiz, made an unsafe turning movement toward the right and the car traveled down an embankment where it crashed into a tree, according to CHP Officer M. Ochoa.
Ortiz was wearing a seatbelt but Nunez was not, authorities said.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, Ochoa said.
Alcohol and drugs are suspected to be factors in the crash, he added.
