A greater-alarm fire damaged a Fullerton home Monday morning, a deputy fire chief said.

The fire at 2039 Hessen Street was reported at 3:26 a.m., said Deputy Fullerton Fire Chief Tom Schultz.

The call came in as a natural gas explosion in the garage but arriving firefighters found a “working garage fire that stretched into the house,” Schultz said.

“Firefighters did a good, aggressive attack,” he said. They put out the main body of the fire within 15 minutes of their arrival. The fire had spread into the attic.

The people inside the house were awakened by the explosion, Schultz said. They all got out of the home and there were no injuries.

The fire rose to a second alarm, he said, with 40 firefighters on the job from Fullerton, Anaheim and the Orange County Fire Authority.

The cause was under investigation, Schultz said.
