Police Wednesday announced the arrests of two suspected gang members in connection with the May 20 killing of a 39-year-old man who was shot in his car, which then crashed into several parked vehicles in Pomona.
Officers were sent about 1:55 that afternoon to the 1300 block of Cordova Street to investigate reports of shots fired following what sounded like a traffic collision and found Joel Gonzalez of Pomona suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Pomona Police Department.
Gonzalez, who had been driving south on Cordova Street when he was shot, was pronounced dead the following day, police said.
Officers with the Pomona Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit and Major Crimes Task Force made a traffic stop Saturday in the San Bernardino County community of Highland and arrested 27-year-old Timothy Campbell in connection with the shooting. Later that evening, the investigators identified and arrested the suspected driver in the shooting at a hotel in the city of Ontario.
Cory Johnson, 39, was booked on suspicion of murder and Johnson on suspicion of being an accessory, according to a police statement that describes them as “suspected gang members and non-Pomona residents.”
Both men were being held in lieu of $2 million bail, according to sheriff’s inmate records.
Officers served three search warrants in Ontario, Fontana and Highland during the investigation, recovering several firearms, including four handguns, according to Pomona police.
The California Highway Patrol and police in Montebello, Fontana and San Bernardino assisted in the investigation.
Additional information is being sought about the killing and anyone who might be able to assist investigators was urged to call Pomona police at (909) 620-2085. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling (800) 222-TIPS.
