A 20-year-old man accused of shooting an acquaintance in Santa Ana last month was charged with murder Tuesday.
Carlos Alexander Gonzalez also faces a sentencing enhancement for discharge of a firearm causing death.
He was arrested Sunday and booked on suspicion of killing 20-year-old Bryan Anthony Steubing of Santa Ana, and he was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
Steubing was gunned down about 3:40 a.m. on May 19 in the 3100 block of South Main Street, according to Santa Ana Police Department Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
Gonzalez and Steubing are “acquaintances,” Bertagna said.
“He’s been a person of interest from day one, so it was just a matter of getting enough evidence to issue a warrant for his arrest,” Bertagna said.
Investigators initially believed it was a gang-related shooting, but now doubt that, Bertagna noted.
Gonzalez also faces charges related to several other prior cases, including attempted robbery, a felony, and a misdemeanor count of possession of a sawed-off shotgun, for his alleged role in an attempted stickup of a man riding to work on his bicycle in Costa Mesa on July 30, 2016, according to court records.
Gonzalez is also charged in connection with the strong-arm robbery and beating of a victim in Santa Ana on Oct. 19, 2016, who had her cellphone taken, according to court records.
And, Gonzalez was charged this year with methamphetamine usage and possession of Xanax on Oct. 17, 2017, according to court records.
