An ethics code established for the mayor, council members and other municipal officers in Riverside will undergo an annual review in two weeks, and residents are invited to propose changes, city officials announced Tuesday.

“This annual meeting is an important outreach of our local government,” City Clerk Colleen Nicol said. “Citizen engagement in this process improves decision-making.”

The Riverside City Council’s Governmental Affairs Committee will convene a public meeting on the afternoon of Sept. 5 at City Hall to scrutinize proposals on what should be modified in the code, based first on recommendations from the Board of Ethics.

Anyone attending the meeting will have an opportunity to submit comments on what the code should and should not include.

The code was established following voter-approved amendments to the city charter in 2004. In addition to the mayor and council members, the code applies to municipal boards, commissions and committees.

It’s intended to provide guidance in how to handle issues that arise from conflicts of interest, pubic utterances and similar matters.

The mayor and several councilmen have been named in ethics complaints over the last few years.

More information about the meeting is available at www.riverside.ca.gov, or by contacting the clerk’s office (951) 826-5557.
