A 30-year-old driver was free on bail Tuesday following his arrest for allegedly driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash in South Los Angeles in which one of his six passengers to be ejected from his vehicle.
The crash occurred about 2:40 a.m. Sunday in the area of 33rd Street and Central Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Wilfredo Vaquiz Escobar was arrested at his South Los Angeles home about 8 a.m. that day.
Investigators allege Escobar was at the wheel of a white 2017 Honda Accord, traveling south on Central Avenue and approaching 33rd Street at an unsafe speed, when he lost control of the sedan. The car spun out and plowed into six parked vehicles, severely damaging them, and causing a male passenger in the car to be thrown onto the pavement, police said.
“When Escobar’s vehicle came to rest, it was on the wrong side of the street as it collided with the sixth parked vehicle,” according to an LAPD statement.
The ejected victim and three other passengers were taken to a hospital. All were in stable condition, police said.
Two other passengers were treated at the scene and released, according to the LAPD.
Escobar was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and causing injuries and was released the following day after posting $100,000 bail.
