
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County dropped to 6.9 percent in August, down from a revised 7.2 percent the previous month, the state Employment Development Department reported Friday.
The 6.9 percent rate was well below the 8.1 percent rate from August 2014.
In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the unemployment rate was 4.5 percent, down from 4.7 percent in July.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for California was 6.1 percent in August, down from 6.2 percent in July and below the 7.4 percent rate in August 2014. The comparable estimates for the nation were 5.1 percent in August, 5.3 percent in July and 6.1 percent a year ago.
According to the EDD, total nonfarm employment increased in Los Angeles County by 7,900 jobs between July and August to reach nearly 4.3 million. The start of the school year powered an increase in the government sector, which posted a gain of 5,700 jobs.
About 347,000 people were unemployed in August in Los Angeles County, which has a workforce of about 5.1 million.
