A ceremony marking the start of a major rehabilitation project for a deteriorated section of Thousand Palms roadway will be held Wednesday.

A quarter-mile portion of Robert Road stretching from Ramon Road to La Canada Way will be reconstructed and replaced starting this week.

The $588,000 Robert Road Resurfacing Project will include overlay of asphalt, installation of curb ramps and replacement of damaged sidewalk. San Bernardino-based Matich Corporation was expected to have the work completed within one month.

“Due to its deterioration, Robert Road is among our county roads in sorest need of repair,” Fourth County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez said. “It is one of the main entries into the Thousand Palms community, providing access to the school, park, community center, library and neighborhood. I am pleased this project will make a dramatic improvement for residents and visitors, making it easier and safer to travel while creating work and aiding our efforts to attract more businesses and jobs.”

The project’s start will be celebrated during a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Thousand Palms Community Center, 31189 Robert Road.
