A public ribbon-cutting will be held March 5 for a $72.5 million transportation infrastructure project on the south end of Corona that centered on constructing a new bridge over Interstate 15.
The work on the Cajalco Road Interchange Improvement Project began in the summer of 2018 and entailed replacing the old two-lane Cajalco Road Bridge with a six-land overcrossing.
New ramps, sidewalks and shoulder space were added as part of the replacement work.
“It is an exciting day in Corona to see this project come to completion,” acting Public Works Director Tom Koper said. “The improvements will increase the capacity of the bridge and ramps to reduce congestion and accommodate projected growth in the area.”
Representatives from the city, Caltrans District 8, the Riverside County Transportation Commission and other agencies are slated to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at one end of the new bridge.
The project was undertaken as a public-private development involving New Home Co. of Corona.
“The completion of the interchange improvement is the result of a successful partnership, one that we are proud to be a part of with the city,” said Leonard Miller, president of New Home.
“This is a crucial transportation benefit for the entire region, and we’re pleased we could contribute significant funds to make it possible.”
During construction, both the northbound and southbound sides of Interstate 15 had to be shut down several times during overnight hours to facilitate removal of the old bridge, causing traffic disruptions.
