A grass fire that erupted Tuesday afternoon on the edge of a Riverside park approached multiple houses but was stopped before reaching them.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 3 p.m. in the 4600 block of Pine Street, near Tequesquite Avenue, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Garrett Coryell said four engine crews and a truck company arrived within a few minutes and encountered flames burning behind a liquor adjacent to Ryan Bonaminio Park.

“It was burning up the hill … toward homes located on Alta Vista Drive,” Coryell said. “Firefighters initiated an aggressive attack on the fire and contained it to half an acre, with no damage to homes or businesses.”

The blaze was declared under control within an hour.

There was no immediate word on what triggered it.
