The number of COVID-positive patients in Riverside County hospitals has increased by 14 people, reversing a recent downward trend, according to the latest state figures.

There were 98 COVID patients in county hospitals, with 19 in intensive care, up six from Saturday’s total.

The latest numbers come two days after the Riverside University Health System reported 22 virus-related deaths, bringing the county’s total to 6,427 since the pandemic began.

The RUHS also reported 252 new positive COVID tests on Friday. The aggregate number of COVID-19 cases recorded in the county since the pandemic began is 595,267.

The RUHS does not report COVID data on weekends.

The number of known active virus cases in the county was 4,362 on Friday. The active count is derived by subtracting deaths and recoveries from the current total — 595,267. Verified patient recoveries countywide are 584,478.

Fatalities are considered trailing indicators because of delays processing death certificates, meaning some deaths may have actually occurred weeks ago, according to health officials.
