A broken water main in Hollywood early Tuesday prompted authorities to close lanes of the nearby Hollywood (101) Freeway, snarling traffic throughout the morning rush hour.

The problem was reported about 3 a.m. south of Sunset Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. Although the break occurred away from the freeway, it wound up flooding parts of the roadway, prompting lane closures in both directions.

A SigAlert was issued a short time afterward, and some lanes remained blocked in each direction late Tuesday morning, the CHP reported.

At times overnight, southbound traffic was backed up to Cahuenga Boulevard and northbound traffic was backed up into downtown Los Angeles, according to reports from the scene.
