One person was killed and another person and a dog were injured Saturday when an SUV hit a tree and went off the road at an off-ramp on the transition from the Santa Ana (5) Freeway to Laguna Canyon Road (133) in Irvine.
The crash was reported at 3:14 p.m. at the Barranca Parkway off-ramp on the transition from the southbound Santa Ana Freeway to Laguna Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol and Orange County Fire Authority.
Witnesses reported a white Audi SUV struck an unknown object, went off the road and into bushes, according to the CHP.
Multiple vehicles reportedly pulled over so occupants could assist the people in the SUV, according to the CHP.
The SUV hit a tree, said OCFA Capt. Sean Doran. One patient was trapped inside the SUV and was extricated by firefighters with hydraulic tools. One patient was out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene and a second person was taken by paramedics to a trauma center, Doran said.
Irvine Animal Control was called to assist a medium-sized dog with a broken rear leg, according to witnesses and the CHP.
