A man was killed Monday morning in a crash on the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Van Nuys, and traffic was backed up for miles.

The crash was first reported at 4:38 a.m. on the northbound San Diego Freeway north of Sherman Way, California Highway Patrol Sean Lough told City News Service.

The man apparently was driving north on the freeway when his vehicle hit the center divider and stopped facing the wrong way, leading authorities to believe preliminarily that he had been driving the wrong way, according to the CHP.

Other vehicles then hit the man’s vehicle, fatally injuring him, the CHP reported. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

Some other people were injured, but their injuries were believed to be minor, the CHP reported.

The CHP issued a SigAlert at 4:57 a.m. shutting down all northbound lanes at Sherman Way for the investigation and clean up. The closure was continuing after daybreak.
