A brush fire chewed through thick vegetation amid soaring temperatures in the Leona Valley area west of Palmdale Wednesday, sending a plume of smoke into the air.
The Woodland Fire was reported shortly after 1 p.m. in the area of Lonesome Valley and Lost Valley roads in a remote area northeast of Bouquet reservoir.
Los Angeles County and Angeles National Forest fire crews responded to the scene. Firefighters on the ground were assisted by crews in water-dropping helicopters.
Initially reported at five acres, county fire crews on the scene reported about an hour into the blaze that the size was holding at about eight acres, although ANF officials indicated it had grown to 25 acres.
A spot fire broke out about a half-mile from the main blaze, but ground crews reported that it was quickly brought under control.
There were no reports of any injuries or structural damage, although crews were setting up structure-defense teams to protect homes in the area. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
