Two motorcyclists were killed in a crash involving approximately 50 bikers Sunday morning on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Irvine, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 12:15 a.m. on the northbound freeway at Culver Drive, where there was a report of a rider down in the middle lane, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The CHP said there were approximately 50 motorcyclists at the scene of the crash.

Paramedics pronounced the second fatality dead at the scene at 12:25 a.m.

A SigAlert closing the northbound lanes for an unknown duration at 12:21 a.m. was cancelled at 4 a.m.

There was no other immediate information available.
