At least one person was killed and another injured in a shooting on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway in the Boyle Heights area Thursday, prompting a freeway closure that snarled traffic during the evening rush hour.

The shooting was reported near Lorena Street around 4:10 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol, and one person was taken to a hospital in unknown condition.

Video from the scene showed a white sheet covering the passenger side of an older-model Cadillac, an indication that a dead body was inside. The car was facing the wrong way on the freeway near the center divider, its rear window shattered by apparent gunfire.

Several other vehicles were also stopped in the area. At least one other car also appeared to have its rear window shattered.

There was no immediate word on what prompted the shooting.

According to reports from the scene, authorities were seeking three suspects, but there was no word on their description or what type of vehicle or vehicles they may have been in.

All northbound lanes of the freeway were closed at the shooting scene, causing a miles-long backup throughout the afternoon rush hour.

CHP officials warned that the freeway would be closed until further notice while the investigation continued.
