A truck hauling boxes of motor oil lost part of its load on the Riverside (91) Freeway in Corona Thursday, causing the product to splatter in lanes, several of which were closed while a clean-up was conducted.
The hazardous materials accident was reported about 3:20 p.m. on the westbound 91, just east of the Corona (71) Expressway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to the CHP, the boxes of oil tumbled into the No. 5 westbound lane, leaving a slick more than 100 feet long.
CHP officers shut down both the No. 5 and 6 lanes for public safety.
Corona Fire Department crews were called to the location and initiated a hazmat cleanup, which was still underway as of 4 p.m.
A SigAlert was issued because of the ensuing traffic jam caused by the lane closures.
The status of the driver and vehicle responsible for the spill could not immediately be confirmed.
