A school bus overheated on Interstate 10 in the Whitewater area Tuesday, prompting a precautionary evacuation of the children aboard.

The bus overheated shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday on the eastbound freeway near the Highway 62 transition, and it was originally reported to the California Highway Patrol as a bus fire.

Riverside County Fire Department public information officer Jasmine Wood told City News Service that arriving units found no smoke or fire, but discovered “some other liquid coming from (the vehicle).” A separate RCFD official confirmed that the children had been evacuated, with one injured patient identified, although the nature of that injury was unclear and it was unknown if anyone was taken to a hospital.

A Hemet Unified School District supervisor said another bus was dispatched to pick up the children, according to the CHP.
