“KPop Demon Hunters,” Netflix’s most popular movie — ever — continues to be a winner after sweeping all 10 of its 53rd annual Annie Awards nominations and positioning itself as the front-runner for the Best Animated Feature Film Academy Award.
In the process, “KPop” swept aside Disney Pixar’s “Elio,” which also had a leading10 nominations going into Saturday’s ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall, and “Zootopia 2,” the worldwide highest-grossing animated film of all time.
“Kpop’s” Annie Award wins included Best Feature, Best Character Animation, Best Direction, Best Music and Best Voice Acting for actress Arden Cho as Rumi, lead singer for the film’s popular singing group, which hunts demons during its off-stage hours.
The movie, released with the tagline “They sing. They dance. They battle demons,” was also the first Netflix film to debut at No. 1 — going on to earn more than $24.6 million dollars at the Box office and more than 500 million total views online since its June release.
In addition to Best Animated Feature, “KPop” also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
In the TV categories, Adult Swim’s “Common Side Effects,” which follows the adventures of two former high school lab partners who re-connect after discovering a mushroom with magic healing powers, came out ahead with four wins including best animated series for mature viewers, best direction and best writing.
