A brush fire that erupted Monday on the south end of Meadowbrook scorched 5.5 acres before it was knocked down.

The non-injury “Richard Fire” was reported shortly after 2 p.m. in the area of Richard and Theda streets, less than a mile east of Highway 74, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate rate to the east across open space. No homes or other structures were in the brusher’s path.

Two Cal Fire air tankers were summoned and initiated runs on the brusher 20 minutes later, slowing the fire to a crawl, according to officials at the scene.

The blaze’s forward rate of spread was stopped at 3 p.m., at which point the tankers departed the location. At 4:30 p.m., the brusher was declared under control, ending mop-up operations.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
