More than 100,000 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized Wednesday in Commerce following an investigation into a licensed importer/exporter that was alleged to be in violation of laws and regulations governing its license.
“As we approach the 4th of July and a typical increase in usage of illegal fireworks, this seizure should be a reminder of our zero tolerance to illegal fireworks in California,” California State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant said in a statement.
According to Cal Fire, fireworks-related blazes have caused more than $4 million in property damage across the state since January. The agency reminded residents that any fireworks lacking the “Safe and Sane” seal are illegal to sell, transport, or use in the state. Violators are subject to fines up to $50,000 and a year in jail.
The state fire marshal’s office “would like to commend ongoing efforts to help curb the use and sales of illegal fireworks, protecting the public from the hazards they present,” Cal Fire officials said in a statement.
Cal Fire officials also commended the collaborative efforts of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Task Force, and other participating law enforcement agencies.
“The collaborative effort of all agencies involved demonstrates their ongoing commitment to protecting our communities,” according to Cal Fire.
Fireworks considered illegal in the state include:
— sky rockets;
— bottle rockets;
— Roman candles;
— aerial shells;
— firecrackers; and
— fireworks that either explode, are launched into the air, or move uncontrollably on the ground.
