One person was killed Tuesday when a big rig collided with numerous vehicles on eastbound Interstate 10 in Thousand Palms.

The crash was reported at about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday west of Washington Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A big rig being driven eastbound on I-10 at an unconfirmed speed veered to the left of the roadway for unknown reasons, crashed into a several vehicles then plowed through the center median, through the guard rail and crashed into a cement truck and a Jeep on the westbound side of the freeway, according to the CHP.

The driver of the cement truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi truck, who was not identified, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for unknown injuries.

Fire crews at the scene assessed and treated six patients, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

One westbound lane and one eastboud lane remain open for traffic.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

  1. We went by this about two hours later. Westbound traffic was still down to one lane. We could see where the semi went through the center guard rail. The burned out cement truck and a Jeep was still on the road. The fires were out, and it appeared they were trying to get the jack knifed trailer off I10. I was surprised to hear that the rig driver survived; apparently the cement truck driver passed away at the scene. A horrific accident.
