A construction crew working at a residential development on the east end of San Jacinto Wednesday struck a gas main, triggering a leak.
The rupture was reported at 4:25 p.m. in the 40000 block of Cahuilla Circle, near North San Jacinto Avenue, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said several engine crews were sent to the location and discovered the pipe had been compromised as a result of being hit with machinery.
SoCal Gas Co. technicians were requested, but as of 4:50 p.m., they were not yet at the scene.
No occupied homes were in the immediate vicinity of the spot where the main was breached, so no evacuations or shelter-in-place orders were required, according to reports from the scene.
Firefighters, however, were trying to limit access to the area as a public safety precaution.
