Verizon restored wireless customers service and is up and running Thursday after a massive outage affecting people in the Southland and across the nation.
According to the outage-tracking site Downdetector, more than 700,000 people in the greater Los Angeles area had reported being affected by the outages, and the impact nationally was far greater with reports in the millions.
Cities such as New York, Chicago, Houston and Atlanta were also hard hit. The outage appeared to begin around 9 a.m. Wednesday with many users seeing “SOS” on their cell phone screens in place of the usual bars showing the strength of the cell signal.
“The outage has been resolved,” said Verizon in a statement posted on its website. “If customers are still having an issue, we encourage them to restart their devices to reconnect to the network. We sincerely apologize for the disruption.”
The telecommunications company also said that the problem had been completely resolved by 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
“For those affected, we will provide account credits,” said Verizon. “Details will be shared directly with customers. We sincerely apologize for the disruption. We will make this right – for any customer affected, we will provide account credits and share updates soon.”
