Firefighters Saturday were battling a brush fire that was burning 250 acres of vegetation in Moreno Valley.
The fire was reported around 2 p.m. Saturday in the area of state Route 60 and Ironwood Avenue. Responding crews said the fire was threatening the freeway, which was closed at Gilman Springs Road.
“The fire will be impacting Highway 60 in approximately 10 minutes,” firefighters reported around 3:30 p.m., but as of 4:20 p.m., the fire department stated that the threat to the highway had been mitigated.
At the initial time of report, the fire was burning 10 acres, but grew to 250 acres by 4:20 p.m., and firefighters said it had the potential to grow to 500 acres.
Additional engines and air resources were assisting with the fire.
No injuries were immediately reported.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
