Firefighters stopped the forward progress Saturday evening of a brush fire that has burned 600 acres of vegetation in Moreno Valley and was 27% contained by lines of cleared vegetation.
The fire was reported at 7:14 a.m. Saturday in the area of state Route 60 and Ironwood Avenue. Responding crews said the fire was threatening the freeway, which was closed at Gilman Springs Road. Westbound 60 was reported open at 8 p.m.
At the initial report, the fire was burning 10 acres, but had jumped to 600 acres by evening and was 27% contained.
Additional engines and air resources were assisting with the fire, including three helicopters and 130 firefighters.
Firefighters planned to remain at the scene overnight working on containment lines.
No injuries were immediately reported.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
