A multi-vehicle crash Saturday sent one vehicle off the San Diego (405) Freeway about 200 feet over the embankment into Woodley Park in Van Nuys and injured five people.

The crash was reported at 7:03 p.m. Saturday on the southbound San Diego Freeway just south of Victory Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol reported.

At least one vehicle occupant who went down the embankment had to be freed by Los Angeles firefighters with hydraulic tools, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Middleton.

It was unclear exactly how many vehicles were involved. The genders, ages and conditions of the five patients were not immediately available.

A witness told the CHP that one vehicle was speeding in and out of lanes before the crash.
