A runway at Los Angeles International Airport remained closed Thursday morning as crews worked to remove a disabled DHL cargo plane that experienced an apparent brake system issue while landing the previous night.
The Kalitta Charters II aircraft, operating on behalf of DHL, experienced the apparent brake system issue upon landing, resulting in a brake overheat, according to a statement from DHL.
There were no injuries and all crew members were safe, the company stated.
The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. Wednesday. Initial reports indicated the tires of the DHL aircraft appeared to catch fire upon landing at LAX.
Los Angeles World Airports stated Thursday morning that the aircraft remained on the airfield and that the runway would remain closed while crews coordinated a safe removal.
The closure could result in flight delays and other operational impacts, although there were no major delays at LAX Thursday morning, airport officials said.
Video from the scene shows what appears to be the plane’s tires detached from the plane and Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responding.
