Long Beach officials announced Wednesday the launch of a $400,000 grant program to help small businesses pay for security upgrades.
The Safe & Secure Long Beach Grant Program will provide grants of as much as $750 to businesses with storefronts of up to 1,500 square feet for the purchase and installation of eligible security equipment, according to the city’s Department of Economic Development & Opportunity.
Eligible improvements include security cameras, floodlighting and alarm systems. Security fencing may also qualify on a case-by-case basis, subject to city codes and permitting requirements, officials said.
“In Long Beach, we believe that safe businesses mean safe neighborhoods,” Mayor Rex Richardson said. “The Safe & Secure Program is a direct investment in the hardworking business owners who make our commercial corridors vibrant and welcoming.”
Businesses must operate a publicly accessible storefront in Long Beach and hold an active city business license to qualify. Funding will be provided as reimbursement after eligible improvements are installed.
Applications will be accepted until funding is exhausted, officials said.
The program is funded with $350,000 allocated from the city’s Redevelopment Agency as part of the City Council-approved fiscal year 2026 budget and an additional $50,000 from Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office.
“Sometimes better lighting, security cameras or an alarm system can make a real difference,” Hahn said. “I’m proud to help Long Beach fund this new program so businesses can make these practical improvements to protect their employees, customers, and storefronts.”
Bo Martinez, director of the Department of Economic Development & Opportunity, said the program is intended to help businesses make security investments while strengthening commercial corridors and neighborhood business districts.
