Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks will celebrate its 70th anniversary Thursday with an all-day event offering customers one of the Mexican restaurant’s longtime combination plates for its original 1956 price of $2.15.

The restaurant will offer its No. 1 House Combo Plate for $2.15 from 11:30 a.m. until midnight, down from its regular price of $27, as part of the anniversary celebration, according to the restaurant.

The plate includes a choice of two traditional items, including cheese, spinach or chicken enchiladas, accompanied by Spanish rice and refried beans.

Casa Vega, at 13301 Ventura Blvd., was founded in 1956 by Ray Vega and has remained under family ownership for seven decades.

“Casa Vega has never just belonged to our family — it belongs to Los Angeles,” owner and CEO Christy Vega said when the announcement was made.

“For 70 years, people have celebrated their lives here. We have watched first dates become marriages, children grow up and bring back children of their own, and families return to the same booths, year after year. There is something incredibly special about being part of people’s memories for that long. This birthday is really our chance to say thank you to Los Angeles for loving Casa Vega and allowing our family to serve this city for 70 years.”

The anniversary follows several other developments at the restaurant this year, including the opening of the Ray Vega Patio, named for its founder.

In May, the city of Los Angeles designated the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Fulton Avenue as “Vega Square” in recognition of the Vega family’s contributions to the city and San Fernando Valley.

Vega was 22 when he opened Casa Vega in 1956, following his parents into the restaurant business. His parents had operated Café Caliente on Olvera Street, according to the restaurant.
