“Resident Evil” opened with $60 million this weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The latest installment in the series of films that began in 2002, inspired by a video game series, beat out last weekend’s top-grossing film, “Practical Magic 2,” which took in $12.1 million in its second weekend, Rentrak reported.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” added $6.5 million to its total in its eighth weekend, and is now the highest grossing film in North American history with over $944 million, breaking the record formerly held by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
“The Odyssey” was fourth with $4.9 million Friday through Sunday in its 10th weekend in theaters.
“Coyote vs. Acme” was fifth with $4.5 million in its fourth week.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “Runner” ($3.18 million), “Daniel and the Fiery Furnace” ($3.14 million), a 40th anniversary re-release of “The Transformers: The Movie” ($3.1 million), “The Weight” ($2.3 million) and “Buddy” ($1.9 million).
