A 28-year-old Fullerton man was behind bars Monday on suspicion of a fatal hit-and-run collision that killed a man in a wheelchair.

Brandon Joel Busse, who was arrested in a Tustin motel, was in Orange County Jail being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Investigators tracked down the suspected Ford Explorer involved in the Aug. 18 collision in the Tustin motel’s parking lot, according to Fullerton police Sgt. Kathryn Hamel.

The victim — 49-year-old Marc Borgfield of Buena Park — was struck by the vehicle just before midnight at 2613 Orangethorpe Ave. and thrown 170 feet.

Fullerton police Sgt. Jeff Stuart said Borgfield appeared to have been outside a crosswalk when he was hit.

The suspect’s vehicle was caught on surveillance video, prompting police to release a photo and ask the public to be on the lookout for a 1991-94 white Ford Explorer with significant front-grill damage.

Borgfield was struck by a vehicle near the same location on March 3, according to Hamel. At that time, his blood-alcohol level was 0.36, more than four times the legal limit for driving, she said.

The victim was struck by another vehicle in Buena Park in March 2008, and had been drinking prior to that collision, as well, Hamel said.

Anyone with information that could help investigators learn more about what happened were asked to contact Orange County Crime Stoppers, which accepts anonymous tips, at (855) TIP-OCCS.
