A man who tried to get on a Metro bus in Covina with an empty gasoline can and a car battery prompted a bomb squad rollout Monday, but authorities determined the man meant no harm.

The man told deputies with the Sheriff’s Transit Bureau, which polices bus and rail lines, he was on his way to repair a vehicle, Ramon Montenegro of the Sheriff’s Department said.

The bus was stopped at Irwindale Avenue and San Bernardino Road, he said.

The gas can was empty, Montenegro said, adding that such potential hazards as fuels and big lead-acid batteries are prohibited from buses.
