Authorities  identified an 87-year-old man who died of an apparent heart attack while driving a car that was found stopped on an onramp to the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway in Carson.

The man was first spotted at 7:23 p.m. Tuesday in a Ford Focus on the Del Amo Boulevard onramp, where he was pronounced dead, said California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball.

His name was William Crass, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter. An autopsy was pending to determine the cause of death.

Crass apparently suffered a heart attack, Kimball said.
