An 89-year-old man died Friday of injuries he suffered a week ago when his Cadillac collided with a Metro Blue Line train in Long Beach, police said.
Robert Lee Mills of Signal Hill, who had been hospitalized since the Sept. 12 crash at the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and Burnett Street, was pronounced dead this morning, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
According to the preliminary crash investigation, Mills was stopped in the left turn lane of southbound Long Beach Boulevard, waiting for a red left turn arrow to change to green, about 9:30 last Friday night.
“Southbound vehicular and train traffic had the green light to go south on Long Beach Boulevard across Burnett Street,” according to a police statement. “As the train (sounded) its horn and proceeded to cross Burnett Street, Mills drove into the intersection to make his left turn.”
The train broadsided Mills’ 2005 Cadillac CTS, pushing it around 50 feet through the intersection.
No one aboard the train was injured, and no one was cited or arrested.
