Updated 7 p.m. Sept. 21, 2014.

Sheriff’s deputies have arrested the boyfriend of a woman found stabbed to death at her home in Palmdale, authorities said.

Police described Jose Martinez, 36, as a person of interest in the slaying of the Magda Bermudez, 49, who was found with apparent stab wounds to the upper torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene. But when he was arrested at 11 p.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of Palmdale Boulevard he was booked for murder, said Lt. Ken Right of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station. Bail was set at $1 million, according to the sheriff’s inmate records, and a Sept. 23 court appearance was set.

Deputies had responded to a home in the 38700 block of 3rd Street East at 1:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report that a person wasn’t breathing, said Dep. Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

“According to witness statements, the victim was fighting with her boyfriend earlier in the day. However, when deputies arrived, the boyfriend was no longer at the scene,” Navarro-Suarez said.

Neighbors told a videographer that the victim was in her 40s and that two other residents of the home — a man and a woman — were taken from the scene by sheriff’s investigators.
