The Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad safely detonated a hand grenade after the the device was discovered on the  eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Sunland. LAPD reported using a water cannon on the device, which contained a blasting cap.

The suspicious item was found at 8:01 a.m. by crew working on the ramp, LAPD Media Relations Officer Lillian Preciado told NBC4.

The freeway reopened around 11 a.m. according to California Highway Patrol.
