A 17-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle and killed Wednesday while walking in the center divider area of the Chino Valley (71) Freeway in Pomona, authorities said.
Gabriel Pierson of Pomona died at the scene of his injury, which occurred about 12:20 a.m. on the southbound freeway north of Mission Boulevard, according to the coroner’s office and the California Highway Patrol.
According to the preliminary report, CHP dispatchers received a call that a pedestrian was walking in the center divider area, and then a second call a short time later that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle, the CHP reported. It was unknown why he was walking on the freeway.
Pierson was autistic and reported as missing to the authorities by his mother shortly before the fatal accident, police told CBS2.
The motorist, who remained at the scene, was interviewed by officers and was not arrested, the CHP reported. The fatality remains under investigation.
