A man was killed when the car he was driving struck the rear of a big rig on the westbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Pomona, authorities said Thursday.
The collision occurred around 12:55 a.m. east of Kellogg Drive, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Cody Campbell, 28, of La Mirada died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
According to the preliminary report, Campbell was driving a 2000 Honda Accord “at a high rate of speed,” and the car hit the rear of a big rig that was going about 55 mph, the CHP reported.
Videographers at the scene said the big rig, which was initially reported to have left the scene, pulled over about a quarter mile past the point of impact.
All but one of the westbound lanes of the freeway were closed for several hours while an investigation was conducted.
