A 22-year-old man was behind bars Sunday, suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol when his SUV struck and killed a 22-year-old woman as she walked on a Van Nuys sidewalk.

The crash happened about 11:50 p.m. Saturday on Sepulveda Boulevard near Victory Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

Roberto Jimenez of Van Nuys was driving a 1999 Toyota 4Runner southbound on Sepulveda when the SUV veered in a southwest direction, hitting the curb and onto the sidewalk.

The 4Runner hit pedestrian Haley Coreas of Van Nuys, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The vehicle also hit a block wall and ended up on its side, according to the LAPD.

Jimenez was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
