A man was in custody Monday for allegedly killing another man in an apparent gang-related shooting in South Los Angeles.

The shooting occurred about 12:20 p.m. Sunday near 81st Street and Avalon Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Donald Champmen, 28, died at a hospital, police said.

Marcus Smith, 21, was booked on suspicion of murder and was held on $1 million bail, police said. A 31-year-old man who may have been driving a car used in the crime was questioned and released, police said. His name was not released.

“Two suspects were driving near the intersection … when one of the suspects exited the car, approached Champmen and shot him,” according to police. “A group of citizens near the area chased the first suspect as he ran away from the location. The good Samaritans detained the suspect until police arrived and took him into custody.

“Other witnesses saw the suspect vehicle and identified the driver as an additional suspect,” police said. “Officers took the driver of the vehicle into custody. During the investigation, all of the citizens that apprehended the first suspect and identified the second suspect left the scene before giving their statements.”

LAPD Sgt. Scott Blackman, watch commander of the 77th Street Station, said the victim was shot in the face, and the victim and suspects were believed to be rival gang members.

Anyone knowing more about the crime was urged to call detectives Geiger or Feria at (213) 485-1383 or (877) LAPD-247.
