A South Gate police car and a car that had been reported stolen collided Monday, and an officer and the suspect were taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said.
The crash occurred at Kansas and Truba avenues about 2:40 a.m., the South Gate Police Department reported.
“South Gate PD was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle,” police said in a statement. “As the suspect approached the intersection … the suspect vehicle collided with one of the officers responding to assist the pursuing officer. The collision resulted in the officer being trapped inside of his police unit.”
Firefighters freed the trapped officer, and he and the suspect were transported for hospital treatment. The name of the suspect was not immediately released. The officer is not in critical condition, a police lieutenant said.
