Three firefighters were injured Saturday night as a major emergency structure fire ripped through a Venice storage facility.

The fire at Extra Space Storage at 658 Venice Blvd. was reported at 7:37 p.m. and firefighters continued to battle blaze over three hours later, Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The two-story building’s metal roof hampered vertical ventilation efforts and firefighters used diamond-tipped rotary saw blades to cut through the structure’s walls amid dark and smoky conditions, Scott said, adding that the fire was burning extremely hot.

About 10:50 p.m., firefighters took up a defensive posture, pouring water on the flames from outside the building, he said.

More than 100 firefighters were battling the blaze. One of them suffered an unspecified injury and another sustained a back injury and heat blisters, both were was taken to a hospital for treatment, Scott said.

An engine company captain also was injured and was being evaluated at the scene, Scott said.

It was unclear if the captain was taken to a hospital.
