A sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man along the railroad tracks behind Paramount High School Monday after being told he was armed with a handgun.

Detectives later learned a school resource deputy working on the high school campus learned that a possible fight was pending. A second informant said one of the individuals was armed with a handgun, and provided a description of the individuals.

The deputy radioed a description to the other deputies searching the area. One responding deputy saw individuals who matched the description and tried to make contact with them. It was at this point a deputy involved shooting occurred, according to the sheriff’s department.

The suspect, described only as a male in his late 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting between Paramount Boulevard and Downey Avenue was reported about 2:35 p.m., deputies with the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau said.

It was not clear what happened to the other individual, but the sheriff’s department said no one was outstanding. It also was not clear if the incident was related to something that originated on the campus.
