Two burglary suspects were in custody Tuesday after a clerk heard them trying to break into a Whittier store and called police who caught them nearby, authorities said Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. Monday at the Greenleaf Market at 7601 Greenleaf Ave., said Whittier police Lt. Jay Tatman.

The clerk called police and said someone was about to break in, and hid in a closet, he said.

When police arrived, they found the burglary suspects trying to hide outside the store and took them into custody, Tatman said. One is 20 years old and the other is 15.

“They broke the glass, which alerted the employee,” he said.
