Two Los Angeles police officers on patrol Wednesday morning helped a mother evacuate two children from a burning South Los Angeles home, a sergeant said.

The incident occurred about 2:15 a.m. when Officer Steve Sainz and Officer William Chamberlain saw flames coming from the back of a home in the 500 block of West 59th Street, said Sgt. Rick Rodgers of the LAPD’s 77th Street Station.

“They saw the building was on fire so they ran up to the door. At the same time the mom came out with two kids. She was overwhelmed from the smoke and ready to pass out. They helped her and the kids,” Rodgers said.

A news videographer at the scene said it appeared the fire was in an outside water heater locker that exposed the building to flames, but firefighters quickly put it out.
