A 16-year-old girl walking to school escaped serious injury Thursday when a man walked up to her in the South Whittier Heights area and slashed her shirt with a knife.
The girl was walking in the area of Colima and Leffingwell roads when a four-door black vehicle pulled up and one of three suspects got out and made contact with her, sheriff’s Sgt. Jose Navares said.
“She tried to avoid them and one of the males began swinging a knife and slashed her shirt,” he said. “She fled the scene and the males fled the scene as well.”
Sheriff’s deputies were called the location at 7:24 a.m., about 30 minutes after the attack occurred, he said. It was unclear why the teenager took that long to inform authorities.
Navares said the girl was either en route to a bus stop or walking to a friend’s house to get a ride to school, which is in nearby Whittier.
Two of the suspects were described as 30 to 40 years old, heavy set men about 5-foot-10. The other suspect was described as a 5-foot-7 man weighing 150 pounds.
