A man accused of firing multiple shots at sheriff’s deputies from a home in Lawndale was charged with 16 felonies, including attempted murder of a peace officer.
Travis Herr, 23, was shot and wounded by sheriff’s deputies around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, bringing the shooting spree to an end. Sheriff’s officials said Herr began shooting around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday at a house in the 4200 block of 164th Street.
The shots prompted evacuations of nearby homes and even the closure of offramps from the San Diego (405) Freeway to Hawthorne Boulevard.
Herr was charged with seven counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, seven counts of assault with a machine gun on a peace officer and two counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling. Prosecutors said Herr fired shots at responding deputies from both inside and outside the home.
He was shot by at least one deputy while walking alongside the home with a shotgun in his hands.
An arraignment date has not been scheduled. Prosecutors said they plan to ask that his bail be set at $7.7 million.
If convicted of all charges, he faces a possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
